4 Important Steps to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Did you know that our teeth are meant to last a lifetime with proper care? Sometimes, however, life and oral disease get in the way of maintaining healthy teeth. While many people may not be able to keep all their teeth for a lifetime, there are proactive measures people can take to help keep teeth healthy for decades to come.

Our oral surgeons are accepting new patients. If you have questions about procedures such as corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, or dental implants, give us a call to schedule a consultation.

Keep Routine Dental Appointments

You should visit a dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. Dental cleanings and checkups can have preventive benefits as well as help aid in the early detection of a number of oral health concerns. Foregoing regular appointments could lead to the development and progression of destructive conditions like tooth decay and gum disease.

Dental checkups and cleanings are comfortable, non-invasive ways to monitor your oral health on a consistent basis and prevent the development of disease-causing surface debris.

Practice Proper Oral Hygiene

Every time we eat – and even after meals – our teeth are under attack from harmful bacteria and the by-products they produce. Since our teeth are often under attack, oral hygiene is necessary to keep teeth healthy in between appointments.

People should floss once per day and floss twice a day. All products used such as toothpaste, floss, and one’s toothbrush should have the ADA seal of approval. When brushing, be sure to gently brush all surfaces of each tooth in gentle, circular motions to effectively remove debris and plaque. Flossing should be done with care so that all spaces between teeth and along the gum line have been cleaned.

Reduce Sugar Intake

Did you know that when you eat something with sugar in it, bacteria will feed on it? It’s true. Bacteria is the natural source of food for bacteria. Reducing sugar intake can keep teeth healthier by starving harmful bacteria.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is an excellent way to keep your mouth hydrated and your teeth clean. Drinking water helps dilute aid and rinse away food particles.
