Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that come in during our adult years – normally between the ages of 17 and 25. Since these teeth erupt many years after the rest of adult teeth, they typically do not come through the gums in healthy, upright positions. Due to lack of room for their arrival, these teeth might not erupt at all – or partially erupt the gums. Many patients’ wisdom teeth become impacted or “stuck” in the gums and/or jawbone.
Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth contribute to oral health issues such as abscesses and gum disease. They can also make oral function quite painful. This is why many dentists refer patients to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal. Extracting these teeth can prevent a number of oral health complications and restore a patient’s quality of life.

How will I know when my wisdom teeth will arrive?
Keeping routine dental checkups will help track the arrival of wisdom teeth. During checkups, your dentist will take X-rays that can reveal if you have wisdom teeth and if they will erupt soon. These X-rays can also reveal whether your wisdom teeth are impacted.
Sometimes, the arrival of wisdom teeth presents noticeable symptoms such as:
- Throbbing sensations at the back of the mouth
- Swollen and inflamed gums
- Headaches and earaches
- Visible changes to the alignment of teeth
- Bleeding gums – especially along the back teeth
- Bad breath
If you experience the symptoms listed above, discuss them with your dentist as soon as possible.
Why should I see a specialist for wisdom tooth extractions?
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) is a specialist that has extensive training to remove wisdom teeth. Third molars tend to be the most difficult teeth to remove. This is because their roots curve around the jaw and because of their proximity to nerve endings and other delicate tissues. An OMS can also administer more powerful medications to keep patients comfortable during surgery.
