The first step in wisdom tooth extraction is to consult with an oral surgeon to determine whether your wisdom teeth are indeed impacted and will need to be removed surgically. If wisdom tooth extraction is indicated, then the surgeon can begin the treatment planning process.
In straightforward cases, the oral surgeon should be able to remove all of the wisdom teeth at the same time, especially if patients undergo the procedure as older teenagers or young adults. Wisdom tooth extraction is simpler in younger patients, and they also tend to recuperate more quickly after extraction.
Wisdom teeth extraction is performed in an outpatient setting, and the patient may receive sedation or general anesthesia for maximum comfort. If you choose this treatment, you will need to make arrangements for a responsible adult to escort you home. Additionally, you should pay close attention to your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to reduce your risk of complications that could interfere with the healing process and extend the amount of time you spend recovering.
There may be some circumstances in which the surgeon will recommend staggered extractions rather than taking out all of the wisdom teeth in a single session. For example, it can be more complex to remove wisdom teeth in patients in their late twenties and beyond, so the surgeon may need to schedule multiple appointments for extractions in such cases. Other factors unique to the patient may also be considered in the treatment plan.
Many people have all four of their wisdom teeth removed at the same time. To learn if this is possible or recommended in your case, call our office to schedule an evaluation.
