What to Expect With Your First Visit to the Oral Surgeon

Do you have your first appointment with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon soon? You’ve probably been referred by your dentist, and you might be wondering how your visit with an oral surgeon will be different from a regular dental appointment.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specialists in treating health concerns with your teeth, gums, and jaw. They use specialized, advanced technology to diagnose and treat oral conditions and complications. Rest assured, you’re in good hands with an oral surgeon at COOMSA, and here is what you can expect during your first visit.

Imaging for Evaluation

At COOMSA, or Central Oklahoma Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, we use the most modern and innovative technology available to evaluate, plan, and implement treatment.

When you come for your consultation, we’ll use technology such as our Intraoral Scanner. This IOS creates a 3D model of your mouth that helps us explain your diagnosis and treatment plan.

We’ll also use some familiar technology, such as X-rays. You can bring recent scans from your dentist, or we will take images during your consultation to help us identify your oral health needs.

Discussion with Your Oral Surgeon

An important part of your initial visit and consultation is the discussion you’ll have with your oral surgeon. The doctor will ask you several questions to understand any symptoms you are experiencing and learn about your health history.

The oral surgeon will also take time to explain any diagnoses based on your answers to questions, diagnostic imaging, and information from your regular dentist.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We want you to feel fully informed and comfortable before beginning your treatment plan.

Solutions and Treatment Plan with Your Oral Surgeon

Once we’ve completed the imaging and discussed our findings with you, we will also offer solutions and a treatment plan to address your symptoms and oral health concerns. The plan may include surgery, restorative procedures, and/or anesthesia options.

Your doctor will also discuss how to prepare for your surgical procedure and explain your recovery process. Our goal is to provide solutions and an ideal treatment plan that works best for you.
