16 Nov Oral Surgery: Post-Surgical Care
If you have an upcoming oral surgery scheduled, you likely have questions about what to expect after your procedure. Caring for your mouth after treatment is an important part of the recovery process. It is important to follow all instructions given to you by your oral surgeon and make time for rest so that the body can heal. Ensuring optimal healing is a commitment to one’s self. Following are some helpful tips for post-surgical care.
What to Expect
Depending on the type of treatment you received, you may experience some bleeding, swelling, and/or discomfort. Fortunately, there are ways to assuage symptoms and improve comfort. Some of these tips involve using simple ingredients that nearly everyone has on hand.
Controlling Bleeding
Experiencing bleeding is common after certain procedures such as a tooth extraction. To control any bleeding, use sterile gauze. Simply place rolled up gauze over the surgical site. Apply gentle pressure for about half an hour. You can repeat this process until bleeding is controlled. Be sure not to touch the surgical site with your fingers. A blood clot needs to form so that the wound can heal.
Easing Swelling
Swelling is common after oral surgery of any kind. To reduce swelling or inflammation, you can place an ice pack on your face where your procedure occurred. If both sides of your face have swollen, alternate ice packs on the left and right sides for about 20 minutes each time. Ice packs will only reduce swelling for a certain amount of time after treatment. After this timeframe, you can improve comfort by applying a warm compress over your face.
Managing Discomfort
Some discomfort can be managed with over the counter medication such as Tylenol or Aleve. Depending on the nature of your treatment, prescription medication may be necessary. When taking medication, be sure to take it exactly as directed by our doctors and if you develop nausea, discontinue use.
