When Can I Return to Work After Dental Implant Placement?

When planning for a surgical treatment, such as dental implant placement, patients want to be prepared for any deviations from their routine, such as taking time off from work. Fortunately, when healing progresses as expected, most patients will only need to miss a few days of work.

The procedure for placing dental implants is typically completed in a few hours in an outpatient setting. Patients return home the same day to begin their recovery. You’ll want to take it easy for a few days, but you will probably be able to resume most normal activity (other than vigorous exercise) after this period.

Complications can derail your recovery and extend the amount of time that you’re out of commission, so it’s important to do everything possible to prevent them. Your oral surgeon will give you thorough instructions for self-care after dental implant placement so that you can do everything possible to reduce your risk of complications. You should be sure to clean your mouth as directed to minimize the presence of bacteria that could cause a post-operative infection. You may also need to adjust your diet for a few days so that you don’t disrupt healing at the implant site.

Your oral surgeon will also educate you on the signs of post-operative concerns that require prompt assessment and treatment by a professional. There are certain issues that warrant an immediate call to our office to follow-up.

Keep in mind that the osseointegration process in which the bone fuses with the titanium implants takes place over the course of several months. While you may be able to return to work within days of dental implant placement, you may need to make other long-term adjustments to your routine until osseointegration is complete. Ask your surgeon about this.

Most patients will be able to get back to work and school within a few days of having their dental implants placed. For more information on what you might expect from your recovery process, call our office and speak to one of our knowledgeable staff members.
